My editing rates vary from $4 a page to $18 a page, depending upon the level of editing required/ requested and your timeframe. I define a "page" as 300 words. (You can determine how many words your document contains by using the "word count" feature in Microsoft Word.) My standard timeframe is generally a two-week turnaround time on a document that is 120 pages or less. I am flexible and can work within whatever timeframe you require.
I try to be fair to both you and myself when pricing each project. I request a sample of the work to be edited to ensure that we will both be happy with the final product. Please note that most non-native English speakers require "medium editing" described below.
Levels of Editing and Additional Services
Light Editing/ Simple Proofreading
At this level of editing, I identify and correct typographical errors, punctuation errors, misspellings, and errors in word choice and usage. Additionally, I ensure consistency in point of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person), verb tense, and level of formality. I also ensure that your document adheres to the style of your choice (APA, MLA, Turabian/ Chicago, etc.).
Medium Editing/ Copy-Editing
In addition to the services included in the light editing description, at this level I also rephrase or rewrite awkward or unclear sentences, replace jargon, make sentences more concise when necessary, and verify that information included in tables, figures, or other graphic elements matches the written description of data in your paper. I also ensure that you have clearly defined key elements in your paper and that you have used consistent terminology throughout your document. If your project includes multiple authors, I ensure that writing style and consistency are maintained throughout the work.
Heavy Editing/ Content Review
Heavy editing includes all of the services described above. In addition, at this level I reorganize your text and restructure paragraphs and sections when necessary to achieve logical coherence. I also read and edit your paper with the idea of not only making your writing stronger, but also making your arguments, evidence, and conclusions stronger. This type of editing includes extensive suggestions and comments for improving your style, rhetoric, and logic. Particularly in areas in which I have expertise (education policy, child welfare policy, health policy, refugee issues and refugee resettlement, early childhood education), I study your tables and figures as well as your methods and provide feedback about content.
I also provide several types of reference and bibliography editing. At the most basic level, I can simply edit your bibliography for adherence to the style of your choosing. Additionally, I can ensure that all references included in your text are included in the bibliography and that all bibliography entries are referenced in your text. Finally, I can also verify each of your bibliographical entries by looking them up and ensuring that the author, title, edition, publisher, city of publication, etc. are all correct. If you are an Endnote user, I can work through this program. If you send me your Endnote library, I can edit the entries to make sure that they have been entered/ imported correctly. This may incur an additional charge depending upon how much work is required. If you do not use Endnote, I can edit your bibliography free-hand.
Resumés/ Cover Letters/ Teaching Portfolios
I provide editing, writing, and formatting services for all types of professional correspondence (cover letters, letters of recommendation, resignations, etc.), CVs, resumés, and teaching portfolios. I can edit or update your correspondence or can write it based on your bulleted list or a phone conversation. Rates vary depending on your timeframe and the amount of work involved. Additional Editing/ Writing Services
I also write executive summaries and concluding chapters from draft reports or other documents. Fees for these services are based on an hourly rate. Contact me for rates and quotes for these services.
